How to launch on Product Hunt in 2026 and not waste 3 weeks of prep for nothing
Product Hunt is still worth doing. But most founders prep the wrong things and then wonder why 400 upvotes turned into 5 paying customers.
Here's what actually moves the needle vs. what's a waste of time:
Worth doing:
- Preparing your hunter outreach 2-3 weeks ahead, not the night before
- Building a notify list through your email list and relevant communities before launch day
- Posting between midnight and 3am PST so you have hours to build early momentum before US traffic peaks
- Responding to every single comment on launch day, fast
Not worth doing:
- Spending weeks on a perfect launch video (a clear GIF of your product in action is enough)
- Trying to coordinate hundreds of people to upvote at exactly the same time (PH's algo flags this)
- Treating PH as your only channel, it should be one piece of a multi-platform launch
Realistic expectations for indie founders:
- Most non-VC-backed products get 100-500 upvotes
- Expect 20-200 signups depending on your category and offer
- The real value is often the DR 90+ backlink and the credibility signal, not the traffic itself
