A 7-year-old boy has been telling me where to find buried bodies. Yesterday, he told me my own secret.
I’m an investigative journalist in Portland. I built my career on logic, facts, and cold, hard truths. I don't believe in the supernatural. Or, at least, I didn't until I got a call from an old friend who works as a child psychologist.
She had a patient, a seven-year-old boy named Leo. He was a quiet kid, always clutching a worn sketchbook. But he was telling stories. Highly specific, horrific stories that a child couldn't possibly know.
When I sat down with him at a local cafe, he didn't look at me. He stared at the rain-streaked window and spoke in a voice entirely devoid of childish inflection.
"The ground was wet," Leo whispered. "It smelled like pine needles and dirt. He dug fast, but the hole kept filling with water. The man he put in the hole was wearing a shiny watch... his arm was bent funny, like a broken branch."
He told me the man was near the old abandoned paper mill out in the Oregon woods. Driven by a morbid journalistic instinct, I drove out there the next day. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decay. I dug for an hour. I was about to chalk it up to a child's dark imagination when my shovel struck something hard. A dull thud.
My heart hammered against my ribs. I dug faster. First came a rotting piece of fabric, then bone, and finally, a skeletal hand. A rusted, high-end watch was still clinging to the wrist. The police later confirmed it: blunt force trauma, dead for five years. He had a single cracked rib.
Exactly as Leo had said.
My skepticism shattered. A creeping dread set in, bleeding into my personal life. My sleek, modern apartment started to feel like a cage. At night, I'd hear a faint, sibilant whisper right beside my ear: Deeper. My reflection in the mirror seemed to lag a fraction of a second behind my movements.
A week later, Leo told me another story ...........
I couldn't bring myself to write out the rest of what happened , but I recorded the full audio of the encounter, the terrifying truth about Leo's next story, and what was actually waiting for me in the dark corner of my apartment.
If you want to know how it ends, I uploaded the full audio experience (with immersive sound design) to my horror archive, The Shadow Codex.
