Im convinced some movies get a "greatness pass" just bc a famous director made them or film twitter will literally dox u if u say they’re boring. I tried rewatching some essentials and honestly... i was checking my phone the whole time.

it’s like once a director gets the auteur status, people pretend their mid work is a masterpiece. or they gas up old movies that clearly didn't age well just to look smart.

Some movies for example (IMO 🙏) :

Everything Everywhere All At Once: look, it was fun the first time but the random = funnyhumor is giving 2012 tumblr vibes. cool visuals but the hype is way too much.

Blade Runner (the original): i get it, it was huge for the 80s. but watching it now?? it’s sooo slow. i respect the vibes but it’s basically a screensaver with a plot. i fell asleep twice.

One Battle After Another: if a random director made this, people would say it’s messy, but since it’s Paul Thomas Anderson it’s "visionary."

2001 Space Odyssey: kubrick is a legend but let's be fr... the first 20 minutes is just monkeys screaming and the middle is just breathing sounds. i get that it’s art but i shouldn't need a textbook to stay awake.

Oppenheimer: Like most biopics, it just doesn't work. 3 hours of men in hats talking is boring, no matter how loud Nolan plays the music.

Mulholland Drive: lynch fans will tell u "it's about the feeling" but If u need a 30 min youtube video to explain the plot, it's not genius, it's just a fever dream that makes zero sense.

Joker: joaquin phoenix was carrying this on his back, but the movie is just a worse version of Taxi Driver with clown makeup. todd phillips really thought "society is mean to me :(" for 2 hours was deep.

idk maybe i’m just a hater ✨ . what are some movies u guys think are carried by director worship or crazy online stans??

what "masterpieces" are actually just mid(okay/6 7) but the fanboys won't let them die?
