How should I take care of my private loans?
Hey all,
So I have been struggling with my student loans and I’m looking for any advice on the best path to take. I (26M) attended a pricey public state university that I paid out of state tuition for going through my undergrad. I made some pretty hasty and uninformed decisions when I was younger going into college. I graduated in 2022. I now have 3 separate loans accounts. Federal, which is somewhere around $25,000. I’m not as concerned with these because of the payment plan I am on. My real concern lies within my private loans. My first year of college, I ended up taking out an approx. $55,000 loan with Sallie Mae with a ridiculous 14% interest rate because I couldn’t find a co-signer except for a relative who has poor credit at the time. For my subsequent 3 years I took out a Citizens Multi year approval loan somewhere in the ballpark of $120,000 at around an 8% interest rate. When I graduated, I needed up consolidating my private student loans under a refinanced citizens student loan. I got a 7.45% interest rate with my mom as a co-signer. This is now $149,934 with a monthly payment of $1,433/month. I couldn’t fit the full private refinance into one loan so I had to keep part of my original citizens loans on its own that has $27,413 with a monthly payment of $317/month at 5.5%. Now all together with my federal loans it is just shy of $2,000/month! Thankfully my family is extremely helpful at this point in my life and are helping me pay this. However, it is starting to really affect my mom’s finances. This is all extremely stressful for me and my family. I can’t keep up with the student loans bills on top of living expenses. I had looked into one of those debt relief programs and I was willing to try it but it would really affect my mom’s credit and neither she or I want to tank her credit for this. I’ve tried to look to see if I can refinance all my private loans into 1 and get my mom off as a co-signer, however no one that I have sent inquiries into will approve a reconciliation over $120,000. Which doesn’t help. I’m just feeling very lost on how to navigate this. What are the terms of bankruptcy? What do I even do? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
