One of the joys and privileges of writing BOND, QUEER BOND was encountering the very real, very brilliant and very queer characters whose stories can be found in the crosshairs of Bond history.

One brilliant force in the book is the performer, artist, James Bond celebrator, anarchic MC and all round queer icon, John Sex!

John's story straddles New York, San Francisco and beyond. A club kid visionary, print kid and counterpulse artist, he was a backstage peer of the likes of RuPaul, a creative contemporary of Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf, a recording artist, sometime stripper and a pal and video muse of Andy Warhol.

Sex's onstage energy, love of the camp, the sublime and the kitsch were legendary. That passion spilled also into his embrace of the Bond thing, its world and chance of fun it represents. I am truly grateful to those who knew John and who opened up their memories, observations and photo albums to pull back the leopard print sheets of a true queer character.

John Sex never made end credits. As so many didn't. But he was always more of an opening number anyways. Today would have been his 70th birthday.
