New Dax Borrough Lone Wolf Quest

Potential spoiler if you don't want to see any of the new free lanes quests. I ran into a wrecked ship while traveling and a guy on it named Dax Burrough demanded I take him to neon. I agreed -- and when we left his ship exploded.

I went to the lodge to drop off Sarah (just did her initial Artifact quest) then go to Neon.... quest won't continue. I re-loaded, spoke to him, left Neon and came back. The quest will not proceed. You have the dialogue option to just attack him. I did that and the quest just disappeared --- no complete or fail or notification or nothing. He had nothing on him but a grendel and neon security armor.

What am I missing here? I don't really care that he died bc I'm going to do a New Game + playthrough anyways. Just want to see how deep that story went if anyone else did it, or experienced the bug.
