New basilic vein fistula — feeling nervous about cannulation

Hi everyone,

I had a fistula created about a month ago. It’s my second one — my first was at the wrist (radiocephalic), but this new one uses the basilic vein, so the cannulation site will be much higher up in my arm.

I’m feeling a bit anxious about it because it seems deeper and also in a more sensitive area compared to my forearm fistula. I’m worried about how painful the needles might be and how easy (or difficult) it will be to access.

For those of you who have a basilic vein fistula:

How was your experience with cannulation?

Is it more painful than a wrist fistula?

Does it get easier over time?

Any tips to make it less stressful (especially since I’m considering doing nocturnal dialysis and possibly self-cannulating)?

Also, if anyone is willing to share pictures (if allowed), I’d really appreciate seeing what it looks like once it’s well established.

Thanks so much
