[Theory] Terminator: Resistance as the connecting link between T3 and T1, T2 timelines.
I recently finished Terminator: Resistance and when contemplating the ending, I had this idea that I'm about to describe.
The theory is that the T3 timeline is based on Jacob Rivers, the player character in the game, choosing not to go back to assist his past self when given the choice by John Connor at the end of the game.
The choice of Jacob going back himself vs refusing to do so and John sending a volunteer is what creates the timeline in which T3 happens.
If Jacob goes back, one can argue that he is more capable in assisting his past self, and therefore his role as the Stranger is crucial in the outcome of the final assault on Skynet Core. With Jacob as the 'Stranger', the assault is successful, Skynet core is destroyed and the hopeful conclusion in T2 plays out as usual.
If a volunteer becomes the Stranger however, he lacks the capability or prowess to influence events that are desirable in mounting a successful assault by Connor on Skynet core. With the volunteer, it is possible that the scene in the game where Stranger Jacob quickly figures out the real location of Skynet core plays out differently, so the Resistance has no idea about the location of Skynet core. This causes them to take losses and need more time in figuring out the real location, during which Skynet is able to make itself decentralized and also foil the final assault, whenever John decides to undertake it.
The details notwithstanding, the final assault in this timeline - with the Stranger volunteer - is unsuccessful, which leads to the eventual capture and termination of John Connor. This is made explicit in T3.
Now all that is left is for Catherine Brewster in this timeline to reprogram a T-850 and send it back in time for the events to play out in T3, where Judgment Day is inevitable.
What do you guys think?
