Cold northern winters- Sand substrate
Current winter set up includes a panel heater, well ventilated coop, roofed run which is also covered in plastic wrap with ventilation gaps.
I live in Ontario and temperatures can range from about −30C (−22F) in winter to +30C (86F) in summer. In the coop with my heater it gets down to -15C.
I used deep litter method with pine shavings this winter and it was ok, but I am very curious about using sand year round. It appears tidier and the appeal of using a litter scoop and not having 12 inches of litter by end of year to clean.
Have other folks here with similar climates used sand substrate year round?
Thank you! 🙏
