Mixed signals from ex

hiii, i'm a big lurker in this sub and its unfortunately my turn!

Me (18F) and my now ex (19F) have been together since we were 16.

about two weeks ago I met up with him and told him that i was done putting in all the effort and when he got his crap together/stopped taking me for granted we could try to move forward together. during that time he would message me lots every night about how sorry he was and how much he loved me.

but then a couple days ago he texted me while i was at work to say that we should just be done so i could "find someone better"(😒). I was a little surprised considering how much he expressed that he wanted me back.

i just said okay, because i obviously wanted to keep my dignity. He asked me not to reach out unless it was an emergency, so i kept contact minimal. this morning he texted me first to tell me to have a good time on a trip im currently taking. like an idiot i took the bate! we get to talking and then he ends it by telling me there's no possibility of us being together again. I'm just confused, why reach out? am i missing something?
