Money making throughout the game?

Hi guys, I just got into Anno and came from factory builders like Dyson Sphere Program. I am loving the chiller (and more beautiful) city building vibe of the game. Finished the campaign story but restarted now on easy mode. One thing I have struggled in both is, how do you make money to cover your expansion, especially mid game. I dont go into the negative but most of the time I am hovering around like +500 - +1000. Is it meant to be this slow to slow down your pace? I just dont like that my ability to build up is way faster than the income I am getting. What are the key things I should be focusing on at each step of the game to get more money? Just got to artisans, making about +750 and my capital has gone from 75,000 to around 12,000.
