Burned out in property accounting… pivot or stick it out?
I’ve been working as a staff accountant since graduating with my bachelor’s in 2021, mostly in commercial/property accounting. My salary progression:
• 2022: $60k (Staff Accountant, hybrid)
• 2023: $63.5k
• 2024: $66k
• Late 2024: $72k (new job, fully remote)
• 2026: $73k
The $1k raise this year was pretty discouraging. It wasn’t performance-based, we were told it was due to our business line losing more clients than it gained.
Lately I’ve been questioning whether I’m actually bad at accounting or just in the wrong niche. I recently learned that property accounting is one of the more stressful areas.
At my previous job, I was moved under a new manager who was extremely micromanaging. I was one of her first direct reports, got put on a PIP within a few months, and the whole experience really wrecked my confidence. I was having anxiety attacks and even gained ~10 lbs during that time. It made me seriously question if I’m cut out for this field.
Now I’m in a new role that’s better (and remote), but I still feel burnt out, mostly from the constant deadlines, chasing people, and overall chaos that seems to come with property accounting.
I’m trying to figure out my next move:
• Should I pivot to a different accounting niche?
• Or move into something like FP&A / financial analyst roles?
• Or is this just what accounting feels like at this level, and becoming a Senior would actually be better?
I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been in property accounting and moved out of it. Did it get better?
