[Baltic Aquascaphe] Caution: My experience with Baltic QC and the hidden cost of international returns.
Hey all.
Long time lurker, first post here.
TLDR; Got a Baltic with obvious QC issues, initiated a return, but instead of declaring full value on the return Baltic reports the watch as 20 euro value, which makes import duty reclamation impossible.
Picked up a bronze/black Baltic Aquascaphe as a summer knockaround watch. It's been on my radar for awhile, and was stoked to have a watch that would document my summer adventures with patina.
I ordered direct from Baltic as I couldn't find any bronze/black specimens in the US. Shipping was fast, and although I was on the hook for a ~$100 import duty, I was totally fine with eating it in exchange for a watch that I've admired for a while.
The watch arrived in a few days, and I was pretty surprised to notice that the bezel was not aligned well. On further naked eye inspection, I found three specs/paint spatters on the dial itself. On a $200 beater I wouldn't have thought twice, but given the all-in price of the Baltic it left me with a sour taste in my mouth.
Instead of getting it serviced, which I'm sure Baltic would have done, I opted for a refund. Something about having to crack a brand new watch due to QC issues bugged me. Not something I've ever had to do with a watch, so I wanted to jump ship and get a full refund.
I initiated my return with Baltic and they value the return as 20 euros on the import duty slip with DHL. This makes clawing back the import duties impossible on a clearly defective item.
I've complained directly to Baltic, but my purpose here is to warn folks about ordering from them. The transaction just feels kinda bad to me, and I wanted to make sure folks know what they're potentially in for if they buy direct from Baltic.
Attaching some photos of the issues. (The hands pass over the specs, so these are not on either the front of back of the crystal. They have a bit of a glint to them, so they almost seem like gilt paint spatters.).
