Looking for volunteer teaching programs in India (free food + stay)

Ask India

Hey everyone

I’m a medical graduate (MD) currently based in Tamil Nadu, and I’ve been thinking seriously about spending some time volunteering, especially teaching children in rural or underserved areas. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and I feel like this is the right time to actually go for it.

I’d really love to contribute by teaching basic science, English, and simple health and hygiene practices. Since I’ll be traveling on a tight budget, I’m mainly looking for programs that can provide food and accommodation or at least keep costs very minimal so I can sustain the experience for a longer period.

I’m open to traveling anywhere within India, and I actually prefer rural or village settings because I feel the experience would be more meaningful there. I’m happy to teach kids, interact with the community, and even conduct basic health awareness sessions if needed. Ideally, I’m looking for something genuine and impactful, not overly commercial.

I had a few questions and would really appreciate any honest insights. Are there any NGOs in India that genuinely provide free stay and food without hidden costs? Are there organizations that specifically value medical volunteers for teaching or health education? I’ve also been considering Workaway if anyone has tried it in India, I’d love to know if it’s actually worth it or if there are things I should be cautious about.

Also, if there are any lesser-known programs that you’d recommend, please do share. And one more thing do these programs usually provide a certificate, and is it actually useful professionally or for government applications?

Would really love to hear your experiences, whether good or bad. Thanks a lot in advance
