21F BE CSE Student Confused: Banking vs IT Career – No Interest in Coding

Academics & Career 🧑‍🎓💼

Hey everyone,

I’m in my 3rd year (6th semester) of BE CSE, and placements have started in my college. I still have one more year before graduation.

Background:

To be eligible for placements, we had to clear certain coding and aptitude levels. I’ve completed:

C Levels 1–3

Java Level 1

Aptitude levels 1-3

So I’m eligible for certain placement drives.

Current Situation:

Recently, when the college asked for placement interest, I said “No” because I’m planning to prepare for government(banking) exams.

The form is now closed, so if I want to change my decision, I’ll have to inform faculty directly.

My concerns about IT jobs:

I cleared coding levels 8 months ago, but since then I’ve stopped practicing coding to focus on banking exams.

I realized I don’t really have interest in software jobs.

Health issues: I have sinus problems and catch colds easily; even an hour in the college lab AC gives me sore throat and headaches.

I lack confidence in coding: struggle to build even simple projects without AI, haven’t solved many LeetCode problems, DSA is still unclear.

I lack communication skills and self-confidence: extremely nervous in seminars/presentations, even

when prepared.

I haven’t participated in any competitions till now, but I have done about 8 projects , they aren't very complex.

Recent development:

A company offering ~17 LPA is coming in the first week of May. Only students who cleared certain coding and aptitude levels are eligible — I qualify.

They advised us to improve skills and prepare.

Now I’m confused whether to stick with my original plan or try placements.

Thoughts on career:

I’m planning to prepare for banking exams (starting with clerk-level). I like mathematics, which is one reason for banking.

I worry about sustainability in IT: I lack interest and strong fundamentals, and tech (especially AI) evolves fast.

Banking seems more stable and less stressful in terms of continuous learning, but I’m not sure if that’s accurate.

For context, I have basic knowledge of C, Python, Java, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SQL.

Questions:

Should I talk to faculty and try to sit for placements anyway?

With one year left, should I focus on coding or fully switch to banking prep?

Is banking a good option given my interest in mathematics and current situation?

Also, I want to know if my decision to choose banking over an IT job is right. If anyone here works in the IT field, could you please share how the situation actually is? I have a fear that even if I get a job, I might not be able to perform well and could get fired easily.

Thanks for reading till the end 🙏
