What is with the drivers in this state?

Politics

In the past several years I have made two extended trips to Massachusetts. I spend several weeks each time in places as far east as Springfield and as far west as just North of Boston. I haven't gone into Boston so my comment here don't include it.

At first I thought I was imagining things or just having bad luck. I have driven extensively in just about every state east of the Mississippi and thought what I was seeing must just be statistical noise. But after both trips here I don't think that anymore.

People here drive like maniacs. They drive at speeds totally unwarranted for a road. There are many narrow roads where you can't see around turns. Virtually every car flies down these and I wince when they go by because there is little width for two vehicles. I also routinely alsmot get collided with in parking lots because I run into people who enter the lot down the wrong lane!!. this is a repeated thing, not a one off.

Example of typical behavior: A garbage truck stops. I am going opposite direction in other lane. The people behind the truck swerve into oncoming traffic and squeeze around the truck! I had to serve to the right to dodge them.

Another example is passing on the shoulder of roads. I don't mean people trying to get off the interstate in a traffic jam and using the shoulder to get to the exit. if you stop at a light or a stop sign in Massachusetts and don't have a right turn signal, it's not uncommon or 2-4 cars behind me to try to pass on the shoulder and then do a right hand turn. Its totally nuts. Heaven forbid I change my mind and suddenly decide to turn right.

Example 3: I am coming up a narrow road with truck parked on side so that cars have to take turns going around it. I am nearly to the truck with another vehicle going about twice the speed limit forces me to pull over despite the fact that they are about 5 car lengths further from the truck than I am and I clearly have right of way.

I could go on but it's a daily occurrence. I don't have those experience in any other state. None. In Massachusetts, I hardly go a single day without seeing some near accident or crazy behavior.

what exactly is the deal?
