Paying off car finance now vs maintaining emergency fund
First post and I have worked through the flowchart, but am after advice on car finance as I’m a little torn. Figures are tricky as I have a learning difference, so I’d appreciate input.
The redemption figure on my car finance agreement is currently £2150. I’ve had the finance agreement since July 2024, originally 4 year term, and have been able to overpay regularly to shorten it. There is no early repayment charge. The monthly repayment is around £250 and at my current overpayment rate, I should clear the balance within 4 months. Interest is 13% APR.
I don’t have any other debt apart from mortgage (low LTV and affordable monthly payments) and Plan 1 student loan + postgrad loan with repayments through my salary.
I’m the only adult in the household.
I currently have approx £2500 in my emergency savings account, instant access, interest is 2.75% AER.
My question is: would it be better to almost clear out the emergency fund to pay off the car finance ‘now’ (this month), or would it be best to maintain the emergency fund and stick to my plan to pay off the car finance within 4 months? I can see pros and cons to each, so I’m finding it hard to make the decision.
