Wondering about long maternity leave (6 months)
American full-spectrum rural MD here (not OB) doing some family planning. I've always felt 3 months is 100% bare minimum a mother should have for maternity leave postpartum, and personally, I just can't imagine going back to work in-person at 3 months to my panel. If I had a choice, I wouldn't go back in person for AT LEAST 6 months, and ideally even then I'd want something other than 1.0 in clinic and hospital call and hospital rounding and the full shebang. Just don't feel like leaving my child for >40 hours a week. Call me crazy.
Anyone in US done prolonged maternity leave? Of course I'd want what's best for my patients and my panel but there's a 100% chance I will not be given more than 3 months off, and I'm actually willing to leave my current job if there's no room for negotiation of some sort. Luckily I'm in a space financially where I can do that but I am willing to do it, and curious if others have.
