How many days do you actually need for Iceland's Ring Road? Honest breakdown with daily driving times
This question comes up constantly, so here's my honest breakdown. I've spent a lot of hours researching and mapping Iceland's routes - distances, driving times, stop durations, fuel gaps. There's no single right answer, but here's what I'd recommend depending on your timeframe.
The comfortable version: 10–12 days
This is what I'd recommend if you want to actually enjoy the trip rather than just survive it.
| Day | Stretch | Driving | What you'll see |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Keflavík → Reykjavík | 50 min | Settle in, walk around Hallgrímskirkja, Sólfar |
| 2 | Golden Circle loop | 3–3.5h total | Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss (+ Secret Lagoon if you want) |
| 3 | Reykjavík → Vík | 2.5–3h | Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara black beach |
| 4 | Vík → Skaftafell area | 2–2.5h | Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, Eldhraun lava field, Svartifoss hike |
| 5 | Skaftafell → Höfn | ~2h | Jökulsárlón, Diamond Beach, Fjallsárlón (quieter alternative) |
| 6 | Höfn → Egilsstaðir | 3–3.5h | Vestrahorn, Eastfjords coast. Winding roads, don't rush. |
| 7 | Egilsstaðir → Mývatn | 2.5h (+1h if you detour to Dettifoss) | Dettifoss is worth the detour. Without it, this is an easy drive. |
| 8 | Mývatn full day | - | Grjótagjá cave, Hverfjall crater hike, Dimmuborgir, Námaskarð |
| 9 | Mývatn → Akureyri | 1–1.5h | Goðafoss on the way, afternoon in Akureyri |
| 10 | Akureyri → Snæfellsnes | 4.5–5h | Longest driving day. Break in Borgarnes. Leave early. |
| 11 | Snæfellsnes full day | - | Kirkjufell, Arnarstapi, Djúpalónssandur, Búðakirkja |
| 12 | Snæfellsnes → Keflavík | 2.5–3h | Depart or extra day in Reykjavík |
Total: ~1,570 km, roughly 26–28h driving = average 2–2.5h/day. That leaves plenty of time for hikes, hot pots, and spontaneous detours.
⚠️ Important: These are pure driving times in good weather on dry roads. Wind, rain, or winter conditions can easily add 30–50% to any of these.
The one-week version: 7 days
Doable, but requires trade-offs. Here's what I'd cut:
- Combine Golden Circle into a half-day on arrival day (start early from Keflavík)
- Compress South Coast: Seljalandsfoss → Jökulsárlón in 2 days instead of 3
- Skip Eastfjords entirely, drive Höfn → Egilsstaðir → Mývatn in one long day (~5.5–6h). Beautiful drive, but you won't stop much.
- Skip Snæfellsnes (or swap it for the North, not both)
Average driving: 3.5–4h/day. Still manageable, but you'll feel the pace. You'll say "we should come back" a lot.
Only 4–5 days? Don't do the Ring Road.
Seriously. You'll spend the whole trip in a car. Pick one region instead:
- South Coast + Golden Circle (4 days), the greatest hits, most popular for a reason
- Snæfellsnes + Golden Circle (4 days), quieter, incredibly photogenic, feels more "real"
- North Iceland from Akureyri (fly in, 3–4 days), Diamond Circle, Mývatn, Húsavík whale watching, zero crowds
Things I wish someone told me before my first trip:
🚗 Never plan more than 4h of driving per day if you want to enjoy the stops. Sounds obvious, gets ignored constantly.
⛽ Fuel up whenever you can east of Vík and in the north. There's a 100+ km stretch between Egilsstaðir and Mývatn with basically nothing. Same between Höfn and Egilsstaðir.
🌧️ Weather adds 30–60 min to any drive. Check road.is every morning. Not optional.
🛒 Do a big grocery run in Reykjavík before you leave. Bónus or Krónan, a Bónus run in Vík costs 30–40% more for the same stuff. Many smaller towns only have one overpriced shop.
🍽️ Eat lunch at gas stations. Not glamorous, but N1 and Olís have decent hot dogs, soup, and sandwiches for 1/3 of restaurant prices. Save the restaurant budget for one nice dinner in Akureyri or Höfn (langoustine!).
📱 Download offline maps. Cell coverage is good along Route 1, but drops to nothing in the Eastfjords, parts of the north, and anywhere near the highlands. Google Maps offline works fine. I also built a free trip planning app for Iceland (iOS App Store) where all routes and POIs work offline, but honestly, Google Maps offline + road.is gets you 90% there.
