Should I Be an EMT?
I have taken prerequisites for the nursing program at a community college since I turned 18, and am now almost 20. I had to take this semester off, and have failed a couple classes in my past semesters. I need some sort of experience in the medical field for my own sake, and college is just not working for me at the moment. I am generally a softer person, indecisive, and quiet, and need something to build me up as a person before I continue with nursing. I am not the person who I want to be while in nursing school. I am hoping becoming an EMT for a couple years will turn me into the person I need to be to continuing with my schooling.
I understand that EMT academy has difficult and strenuous schooling, but I need to be fully engrossed in my schooling to be able to learn. College, as of now, is too slow paced and there are too many filler courses, such as literature, history, etc., while EMT academy is strictly the information you need to learn to be an EMT. The weight of the 6 month EMT academy will also feel extremely lighter compared to the 2-4 years of nursing school, which will be an aid to keep me motivated during schooling.
I would become an IFT EMT before doing 911 work to get experience in bedside manner, hospital routes, etc.. Then if needed, take an EMT refresher course before I continue to 911. Ideally, I will be 22-24 when I am done with my career as an EMT, and be able to continue and finish my nursing school process.
I am fully aware of the stressful and traumatizing experiences EMTs are put through. If I decide to follow this path I will ensure I am as prepared as I can be for the situations I may be put in. If I want this career as a nurse, I will need to be built for similar situations an EMT will experience, which is part of the reason I believe becoming an EMT will be helpful.
I have a strong urge to help and care for others, but I am not the correct person for a career in nursing yet.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
