Trying to get my first feminine hairstyle and feeling overwhelmed

Questioning/Coming Out

Heya! I’m a 33-year-old from the NW suburbs of Chicago. I have pretty significant social anxiety and communication issues, so I used a writing tool to help proofread and make sure everything makes sense. I’m also sorry if this is too long, but I’ve never really put these feelings into words publicly before.

I’ve decided that I finally want to, in an outward-facing physical sense, become the person I keep inside myself. I’ve always felt pressure to conform by wearing jeans and a T-shirt and keeping my hair short and basic. I’ve recently realized how much of my life I’ve spent keeping myself bottled up, and I’m at a point now where I care a lot less about what judgmental people think.

I’ve bought clothes and glasses that I think are really cute, and now I want to take the step of going to a stylist and getting my hair done. This is a huge step for me because it means meeting someone in person and talking about a side of myself that I’ve really only shared with my wife and daughter. That’s why I’m reaching out here for advice. I think this is the right place for this, but I’m sorry if it’s not.

The style that feels right for me is something like a lob with straight-cut bangs. I also want to keep my beard.

I feel like I’m entering new territory by starting to express my nonbinary identity outwardly. I also feel like I’m more publicly stepping into the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, and I’m worried I may be doing it the wrong way or committing some kind of social faux pas.

I guess what I’m ultimately trying to figure out is how to find a stylist who is nonbinary-friendly and understanding of people with anxiety and very low social energy. I’m not sure how to figure out whether a stylist is a good fit for me.

Anyway, does anyone have any advice that might help me?

I was able to make a pic to simulate the haircut on me. ☺️ https://imgur.com/a/fjPCj8b
