SmartBlocks Update: “AI SEO” is mostly fake right now (no one is measuring real AI visibility)
Most “AI SEO” right now is guesswork dressed up as strategy.
People are:
• Adding schema
• Writing “AI-friendly” content
• Tweaking formatting
…and then claiming they’re optimized for AI.
But here’s the problem:
No one is actually measuring whether AI systems are using their site.
Not Ahrefs
Not SEMrush
Not Rank Math SEO
Those tools were built for search engines, not AI systems.
They can tell you rankings.
They can’t tell you AI visibility.
⸻
Here’s what nobody is talking about:
You don’t know:
• If GPTBot has ever touched your site
• If ClaudeBot is crawling your content
• If PerplexityBot is skipping your most important pages
• If AI systems are even respecting your robots.txt
That data is completely invisible in traditional SEO tooling.
So the entire industry is optimizing blind.
⸻
What we’re doing differently with SmartBlocks:
We stopped guessing and went straight to the source:
Server-level signals.
We track actual incoming requests from AI crawlers like:
• GPTBot
• ClaudeBot
• PerplexityBot
Not modeled data.
Not third-party estimates.
Not “AI scores.”
Real traffic.
Then we break it down into things that actually matter:
• Total AI hits
• Unique pages crawled
• High-value page coverage
• Robots-first behavior (do they check rules or just scrape?)
⸻
The uncomfortable truth:
Right now, “AI optimization” without measurement is the same as:
Doing SEO without knowing if Googlebot exists.
That’s where we are.
⸻
Where this is going (and why this matters):
Search is splitting:
1. Indexing layer (Google, Bing)
2. Answer layer (AI systems)
We’ve spent 20+ years building tools for layer 1.
Layer 2 is basically the wild west.
No standards
No real metrics
No attribution
⸻
My bet:
Within the next couple years, the most valuable metric won’t be rankings.
It’ll be:
“Are AI systems using your content to generate answers?”
And right now, almost nobody can answer that.
⸻
I’m not claiming we’ve solved it completely.
But we are actively building what I’d call the AI visibility layer using WordPress as our first client and available to third party clients like Shopify and Wix, based on real observed signals not theory.
If someone has already built this properly, I’d honestly love to see it.
Because from what I can tell, the industry is still flying blind.
