What biting insect can live in my garden and storeroom?
I bought a beautiful house on the Costa Brava in Spain by the sea and forest. I’ve visited the area many times and no problem. But now living here, I’m getting bitten a lot and it’s ruining things. When I walk down the shadowy garden path to the front door, there are ferns, ficus (rubber tree), ivy, lemon trees, palms, and bougainvillea. If I brush against the plants even fully clothed I get bitten but a delayed bite that shows up hours later. They are bad bites and I see the single puncture of the bite, and I get a red reaction around it too. I would’ve thought they’re just harvest mites or chiggers, as I don’t ever see any tiny moving insects. But when I store things in the nearby storeroom, like my wetsuit, and I put it on, I get eaten alive by the same bites. They bite anywhere— my face, legs, torso, etc. The bites don’t form a line or seem organized in any way.
My big question is: What can live both on plants and in my storeroom for months on end to come alive to bite me?
I sprayed the garden path and storeroom 3 times with 9.3% Cypermethrin and notice no difference at all. I don’t think they’re rodent or bird mites, as I never see anything, and they’re not supposed to live on ferns I don’t think. I’m so confused. There’s no activity in the house, and I put a piece of white paper by my bed for days and there’s no visible bugs on it. I just get bitten if I go outside. Can chiggers live in a storeroom in clothing for long periods of time? What is biting me? Can anyone help? My friends don’t get bitten very much, maybe one small bite. I get 5-10 a day!! Just need some insight to help find a way to combat the issue.
