Wife swapped out a busted light socket-- now the rest of the basement is out.

Exactly what the title says. She connected everything the way it was connected to the old socket and... the rest of the sockets in the basement and the outlet connected to that line are all without power BUT the new fixture works just fine. There is clearly some other DIY work going on from former homeowners, but up until today everything worked well and the only change is swapping out the old socket for the new one.The rest of the house is fine, it is just anything connected to that original socket that doesn't work now. Any thoughts on what the heck we may have done? or advice on how to fix anything?
