Need Help With Commander Ideas
I've noticed that I have hit a little bit of a rut with deckbuilding. I saw the 5 new precons and while the reprints are good I realized quickly that I'm one of the few people on this sub that are incredibly underwhelmed with the face and backup commanders (it doesn't help that I already own a lot of the better reprints). I feel like the design team is stuck in a loop where they are shackled to idk either color identity/school identity/ or general laziness to the point where 9 out of 10 commanders do the same thing as existing commanders but only a tiny bit differently. It is fine to be that marginal with the differences in a 60 card format, but for edh it basically means you take a deck you already have, swap the commander, and 95% of that deck will run the same. This does not inspire me to make any of these commanders.
The other problem is that commanders that do occasionally come out that ARE super unique often mean playing a lot of really niche cards. This is a lot of fun when deckbuilding, but in practice I've noticed it usually amounts to "my opponents' don't really understand the deck fully so they just keep the commander off the board rightfully but now my deck is 99 pieces of garbage that do nothing".
I've made a lot of decks and played what I feel like is every archetype of deck at this point but there are tens of thousands of cards so surely I am missing something. Are there any commanders that you all know of and love that are
a) mechanically unique to the point that no other commander can really play the same way without going through tons of hoops and
b) maybe a little bit resilient so that the deck completely folds should the commander be removed 3-4 times
Perhaps there's some weird old commander/mechanic that I am just unaware of or some newer one that I wrote off that is actually really niche and fun to play. I really enjoy deckbuilding, almost more than actually playing the game sometimes but I feel like I've been dying of thirst in a desert of boringly designed legendary creatures for the past few sets. Surely I am missing something and y'all can save me lol. I will list all the commanders I've built at some point if required but generally if the deck type is at all popular I've probably explored it.
