Softcore raid protection

Can someone help me understand softcore raid protection? everything I can find says that a box with 50% of the stuff should be left behind when raided so you don't loose everything. we'll so far that dosnt work at all and each time I log off everything I gone with in an hour with nothing left.

Just trying to learn the game a little
