Should I trade my Toyota Yaris for a newer vehicle?
For some context (sorry if it’s TMI, I just want to include all info that would be helpful for respondents), I bought a used 2013 Toyota Yaris in September of 2024 since it was the only car the credit lender would allow an 18 year old with no credit history.
When I purchased it, it had 163,000 miles. My downpayment was $1500 with a bi-monthly payment of $136 , the total was a bit over 7k, and an APR of 20.99% (the Pennsylvania legal limit for older used cars is 21% LOL). Of course I planned that in 1 year I would refinance, which I did in September 2025 with a credit score of 720 through navy federal with a new APR of 7%.
I have spent about 3k on repairs since but it’s a really reliable vehicle. I don’t have a commute since I work from home, but I’ve taken multiple long trips so now I’m at 170k miles.
I still owe over 5k on the vehicle and I’m not sure if I want to keep dumping that much money into it when I know I’ll trade it in within the next few years. By then the trade in value will probably be a couple paperclips.
I don’t want a new car because I don’t trust cars with a million computers. I want a used car maybe from 2016 and up? I would enjoy a tablet of some sort for GPS and music, but I still want the knobs and whistles for everything else.
Questions: I found out that even if u still owe on a vehicle, u can trade it in, is that true?
Does the balance transfer to ur new car payment?
What would be the best thing to do in my situation financially?
Any other advice?
Sorry again for the long post!!
TLDR: Should I trade in my 2013 Yaris I still owe 5k on with 170k miles? How?
