Oversold

As a customer I’ve just been curious, if you’re oversold, say on king rooms or something, how do you decide who gets those rooms?

Is it first come first served? Or by number of guests?

Oversold seems common and just wondering how it works.

Is there a reason to check in super early to assure a room?
