How to deal with catcalling and weird insinuations?
Sorry, I guess I’m not even sure if I can ask this here. I just saw this sub on my FYP. I know this is a space for women and I really don't want to intrude, but I'm just kind of at a loss and I feel like you guys might actually understand what I’m talking about without making it a joke or something.
I’m 18, I'm a guy and currently on vacation in France with my family. I’ve always been told I look like a girl or whatever, and back home in the US it was mostly just annoying comments from people I knew. Im short and Im thin and Latino, my eyes are weird and big so I guess I do. Even when I posted on some other subreddit a few days ago the people there said I looked like a girl, it did hurt my feelings a little. It's so weird I never expected this kind of stuff in France.
We saved up for years for this trip, like, this was supposed to be the "big" one. Ive been here before with my partner's family but not with my family so I was so happy to finally share it with them I guess. Back home I suppose I did get like weird comments but could have never assumed. Im genuinely embarrassed and this feels superficial but I feel like its an attack on my masculinity
I mean France is great, nothing on it's people, like 90 percent of the trip was alright. We are staying at some posh hotel that we saved up and it has been really really weird here. Not sure if it is my clothes, I was wearing a kind of a tight tank and normal jeans, this makes no sense to me personally. Basically, I’ve been getting approached by guys, once an older women and sometimes groups who just assume Im I don’t even know how to say it. They think I’m an escort?
I was standing near the bathroom for my sister and mom to come and they were taking long I suppose and it was when the worst of it happened. They offered me money I was shocked at first thought I had done something wrong. Asking if I was independent and what agency which I still do not understand. I was dressed kind of stylish I suppose, not anything baggy. I dont feel comfortable wearing those clothes anymore and most of the stuff I packed are along that style.
To be fair, I am bi more into women but yeah, dont have a problem with guys coming up to me, happens a lot, even back home that is completely alright. My problem is that it was genuinely disgusting how they talked about me and I guess I have no idea how to deal with that. I'm rethinking my style, my appearance everything because these random strangers thought I was a prostitute or something. Some guys said they had a "bet" on where Im from I would think racist it was really off.
When I told them I was just a tourist, they didn't believe me and said it was "roleplay" like what?? or playing hard to get. If this is what women hv to go through I am very sorry. Someone even referred to my mother as my "handler". I've gotten like so many cards and stuff. One guy followed me into the elevator and tried to press a business card into my palm for some agency or something.
They were using words I don't even want to type here. One of them actually reached out and touched my arm to "check the quality" of my shirt which was disgusting I mean I do not want strangers touching my chest. One of them tucked money into my waistband I feel so guilty about that it looks like I kept it. I threw it obviously. I was kind of off guard and I stayed silent and did not react which I regret. The worst was when some one threw bills on the table at a cafe for the "lipgloss" I did not have any on. I was with my mom my mom asked me if I knew him and I had to lie.
These people weren't like some drunks also, I mean well dressed probably well off too. Also most were foreigners I think different accent so yeah again nothing against French people they are awesome. Feel like this is ruining our trip, I mean it only takes a little incident to ruin the vibe and I dont want to be the reason but like I dont want to change myself because of some weirdos. My dad is obviously is pissed and my sister thinks its weird.
If this is what I have to go through I imagine it's so much worse for women. Im genuinely sorry. How do you guys deal with it? I have no idea and I feel not so confident. Thanks a lot in advance
