Under these circumstances is SELRES to IRR plausible?
I got out of the Navy in Mar 2025, had a gap in service and joined the reserves in Dec 2025 with the intention of re-rating to IS. However, I have a few hang ups that I was hoping I could get some clarification on:
-
The NRC I'm at said I need to choose a new billet by the beginning of July...however
-
The billets I would be able to choose (presumably) would be IS billets since I reenlisted in the reserves with the intention of becoming an IS...however
-
I haven't been able to select an A-school date to attend and FORMALLY gain the IS rating because I'm waiting on my sf-86 to be adjudicated by a gov agency for a fed job. I was told the navy can't concurrently administer an investigation for a TS/SCI while another entity is...and we all know how long background investigations can take for the gov.
-
the A-school is 3.5 months long and I'd be way outside of my window for choosing a billet.
-
I'm also in the hiring process for some local LE jobs which require a 6 month academy (where you can miss only a minimal amount of days (2-5 in total) in order to complete said academy), as well as a 6 month FTO.
-
Additionally, some of the LEO jobs I've applied to are out of the state I currently live in and would essentially take me across country if I were to accept an offer (given that I receive one, which I expect to), so I would also be transferring from my current reserve command, to another.

I was notified at the beginning of my re-enlistment into SELRES that I needed to attend A-school within 12-14 months.
With all this I was going to ask to be transferred to the IRR. The logistics, along with the eventuality of employment that will have a sporadic schedule and significant time commitments (academy, FLETC, OTJ/FTO hours) would be difficult to manage. And if I can't re-rate to the rating I intended to, I don't have a lot of desire to continue on when my time could be better spent pursuing other endeavors that will advance my civilian career more. I don't have any intentions (anymore) of retiring out of the reserves. I'm also going to be receiving my disability claim compensation soon, and it seems like an added annoyance to have to put aside money every month to have to pay back to the USG because I'll be getting both the VA $ and drill pay $.
I know, I signed a contract, but just looking for practical guidance for next best steps to try and transfer as smoothly as possible to the IRR; or if anybody has had anything similar what happened/what would you advise.
Also worth noting, I was told IS is eligible for a 20k bonus, however I haven't/won't receive it till A-school is complete, so this shouldn't be an issue to my knowledge. Additionally, some of the LEO jobs I've applied to are out of the state I currently live in and would essentially take me across country if I were to accept an offer (given that I receive one, which I expect to), so I would also be transferring from my current reserve command, to another (TRUIC change, I believe).
Anybody that can help elucidate some points, provide insights or advice moving forward to potentially transferring to IRR would be highly appreciated. Thanks yall.
