I would like to apologize for the somewhat irregular release of recent videos. However, to keep “René Laloux Week” complete, I present to you an essay dedicated to Gandahar / Gandahar: Light Years.

(Note: the author of this essay has not read the original novel on which the film is based. All thoughts presented here come solely from the viewing experience of this masterpiece.)

Enjoy the read!

At first glance, Gandahar appears to be an “ideal” state by modern 21st-century standards. The country is ruled by Queen Ambisextra and the Council of Women, whose residence lies in the capital city of Jasper. Instead of worrying about financial crises or industrial pollution, citizens devote themselves to agriculture; wars do not exist, there is no standing army, and the local flora and fauna protect the population.

But the arrival of the Machine-Men changes everything.

An endless stream of robots destroys everything in its path. The government sends the knight Sylvain to investigate, ultimately revealing that calm waters hide dark secrets.

Before reaching his destination, Sylvain is captured by mutants. Seeing his hostility, they ask why he hates them. He replies that the government taught him to view mutants as enemies.

These “monsters” reveal a horrifying truth — far from the last one in the film. Once Gandaharians themselves, they were subjected to genetic mutation experiments by scientists from the capital. When the experiments failed to produce desired results, the government exiled them underground, declaring them enemies of the “true” population. Gifted with long life, a collective consciousness capable of summoning lightning, and the ability to foresee the future, the mutants were condemned to a miserable existence while hoping to return home.

As disturbing as this sounds, the origin of the film’s antagonist — Metamorphis — is even more terrifying.

Imagine a man turned into a state experiment. Eventually, only his brain remains (the fate of the rest of his body unknown), placed within the Eccentric Ocean and injected with chemicals so relentlessly that it develops self-awareness. Originally meant only to control a body, the brain learns to use its own cells for sensation, perception — and murder.

The murder of its creators.

Isolated after the state abandons the experiment, this colossal brain, dimly remembering its former human life, becomes Metamorphis — creator of the Machine-Men.

A lone elderly scientist confirms this truth, while a representative of the Council of Women coldly admits that Gandahar created its own problem.

Sent again to confront Metamorphis, Sylvain is placed into a form of cryogenic sleep. One thousand years later, he finds Metamorphis aged and desperate: fearing death, the brain consumes Gandaharians as sustenance and transforms dead cells into Machine-Men. Lacking sufficient resources, it creates a temporal portal to exploit Gandaharians from the past.

The ending may seem obvious, but recounting it is not the purpose of this essay.

Whether intentionally or not, René Laloux created one of animation’s most powerful dystopias — not in Metamorphis’ world, but in Gandahar itself.

The “paradise” the nation claims to be is artificial. True comfort belongs only to the privileged citizens of Jasper and the Council of Women. Ambisextra monitors the land through mirror-birds, yet Sylvain’s shock after leaving the capital suggests that the ruling elite remains indifferent to life beyond Jasper.

A telling moment occurs when, faced with danger, Ambisextra raises the governmental structure — the “Head” — into the sky, abandoning both mutants and rural citizens.

This reflects an ingrained contempt toward those who differ physically or socially, revealing a society shaped by ideas resembling eugenics.

Although Metamorphis’ Machine-Men advocate anti-individualism, their criticism of Gandaharian morality does not feel entirely unjustified. From the seemingly tender — yet deeply physical — relationship between Sylvain and Erel, to the fact that the rulers’ happiness rests upon the suffering of their own people, Gandahar emerges as a civilization built upon exclusion.

Gandahar is a deeply layered work rich with meaning. René Laloux created a masterpiece that invites endless interpretation. Films like this should be studied in art schools rather than left forgotten on the margins of history.

And finally:
Do you consider Gandahar a utopia destroyed by Metamorphis — or a society that created its own monster?

Thank you for reading.
