Not an electrician

Gemini is telling me that this specific fuse box is a fire hazard. I am in a rental house, is this accurate? What do I do? Below is the response from gemini.

This is a Federal Pacific Electric (FPC) fuse panel. Federal Pacific panels are documented fire hazards due to high failure rates and design flaws. Consult a licensed electrician for a safety inspection and replacement.

The Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panel is not a viable or safe electrical system. It is a documented fire hazard. While your specific unit is a fuse-based panel rather than the notoriously defective Stab-Lok circuit breaker design, the brand is synonymous with engineering failure and lack of safety reliability.

Technical Risk Assessment

FPE equipment was the subject of a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) investigation (1983) which concluded that the company's testing data was fraudulent. Independent engineering analysis by Jesse Aronstein, Ph.D., P.E., indicates that FPE components have a failure rate significantly higher than industry standards, often failing to interrupt power during a surge or short circuit. This leads to overheating and structure fires.

Rental and Legal Implications

1.	Insurability: Most modern insurance providers refuse to issue or renew policies on properties containing FPE panels.

2.	Habitability: Under Illinois law (and general residential building codes), landlords are required to provide a safe and habitable dwelling. A known fire-hazardous electrical system violates this requirement.

3.	Liability: The presence of this panel represents a significant liability. Should an electrical fire occur, the landlord’s failure to replace a known defective brand could be cited as negligence.

Directive for Renters

You should formally notify the landlord in writing regarding the presence of the FPE panel. Request an inspection by a licensed electrician to verify the integrity of the wiring and the fuses. In 2026, these panels are considered obsolete and should be replaced with a modern circuit breaker system (e.g., Square D, Eaton, or Siemens) to meet current National Electrical Code (NEC) safety standards.
