How does smoke cleansing works

Hello guys, I’ve never thought about how the smoke from incense actually cleanses or whats the logic about it (which is my fault ). And I’ve tried to learn more about it specifically the incense and i really cannot find anything, people say that because of the herbs they cleanse but lets be real there are no herbs or real plants in them mostly there are synthetic fragrances so how actually can the smoke cleanse?
