Am I overreacting after my doctor told me to drink garlic shots to prevent cancer and to only eat salads until I lose enough weight until I am "healthy"?
Greetings fellow potatoes and honourable judge Charlotte! I love your videos and enjoy them almost daily when I do things like cooking, hiking or waiting in line for groceries because a grandma decided then there to count all her change.
Now onto my tale and setting the scene!
PS: English is not my mother tongue. Also, sorry if it ends up a little long.
I (30m) went to the doctor to get blood drawn and an ECG (electrocardiogram) done. These two things I need for my next step with my psychiatrist to start medication for my ADHD (late diagnosed, so original I know)
Now some context. The practice I went to did both normal and alternative medicine since I grew up with both. However, since Covid the practice has been steering more so into the direction of delulu and deemed every modern medicine as dangerous. They will still hand it to you but continuously berate you with:
“We really recommend you try something else” or “This is a strong drug that may cause intense discomfort” when it is shit like antibiotics for an infection with fever. That you otherwise could hardly muster without it. Lovely.
Regardless, I still went because finding a new practice is always hell and I am moving soon anyways and to find a temporary solution for 1.5 months only to find another new solution for once I do move is just…no.
So I arrived on the day of and got a doctor I never had before. We call him Dr. N. for nuts because he seemed nuts.
Right of the bat he started talking on this wonder drink of a garlic shot that could help prevent cancer almost entirely and that it would improve my life 100%. Not that cancer was a big genetic thing or whatever.
Despite him sounding like an MLM scam artist, I nodded and bided my time until I would get pricked with the needle and taped with the electrodes.
He was obsessed with my left chest because one year ago I complaint about discomfort there and had thought it was growing rapidly. However, a quick scan and blood test showed that I was fine and it was just fat that had settled there due to me being overweight.
And this was they key issue for Dr. N. See I am a big boy. Roughly 100kg on 178 cm. However, you don’t see it really when I stand since my body distributes its somewhat evenly. Though you see it that I am a bit chonky when I sit. But I’ve been losing weight consistently since January this year and have lost around 15 kg so far and am pretty proud of that. Friends noticed too and even complimented me and asked if I joined the gym. But simply eating less and doing cardio and hikes have helped me achieve this.
But Dr. N didn’t care and simply kept looking into my history. And I couldn’t help but notice his eagerness to find anything cancer related. He kept on talking on how we should have also scanned my scrotum, retaken blood to see a change in hormones and so on. To make sure it wasn’t that because to him it was so clearly an early sign of breast cancer.
I remind you, I am here for a blood test and an ECG. I have literally no complaints and my chest was fine then and it is now. And that was over a bloody year ago.
Dr. N then started to talk about how I should ONLY eat salads from now on. Greens and salads specifically until I have the right weight. Nothing else.
A doctor told me this. Someone with a licence told a patient to eat nothing but salads until they lost enough weight.
This old man was talking like a lunatic with a podcast, I internally thought “ABOSLUTELY NOT” and kept on smiling, waiting until I could donate my blood to the nice medical assistant like a lover to a vampire.
Eventually I was sent to the medical assistant and blood was drawn, ECG was made and I was sent back to Dr. N. Yay.
When I entered his office again, he had his phone in his hand looked at me and said:
“I just have to make a quick phone call.”
Sure. I mean he is a doctor (the jury is out for that one) and might have to call a patient for whatever reason. Or maybe another doctor to discuss a patient. Or there was a medical emergency. I wouldn’t have minded that one bit, that’s part of his job. Right?
Wrong.
He called an insurance company to figure out a private issue with his insurance. From what I gathered, he recently moved to this country (Switzerland) and has to settle his new insurance and thought the absolute best time to do this is when he has a patient who gets charged for the amount of time he was treated…
This guy was on the phone for 15 minutes as I sat there like a child waiting to be noticed by a parent.
During his phone call the medical assistant entered handed him the ECG scan and told me to tell him once he was done that my blood scan was online in the system.
During his phone call I could hear the lady on the other line and he continuously cut her off and just told her all his own conclusions and when he had learned everything, he pretty much hung up on her with an almost dismissive bye.
After he was done, he complaint about the bureaucracy of it all and I told him that my blood was ready.
And as I thought it couldn’t get any weirder. Dr. N proved me wrong as he told me my blood results.
I was healthy. My stats were fine and even excellent at some places and this man said as he checked my insulin and liver levels
“Oh they’re perfect, surprisingly”
…
For people who don’t know. If you are on the heavier side, the chances of developing diabetes type B are higher. And that would show in your insulin and liver. So, he expected me to have diabetes type B because I was heavy? Even though my medical record showed none of that at all at a time I weight significantly more than I do now?
I took a deep breath and hoped that I would soon be done.
He went on (of course he did) that I should do a gastroscopy and colonoscopy to make sure that I have no inflamed intestines. Even though I had never mentioned any complaints and that my digestions are fine and regular.
In general, he seemed almost desperate like a guy who had been horny and single for way too long, to find something majorly wrong. Like cancer or diabetes.
He settled on one liver stat that was slightly elevated which by his own words “probably means nothing” but insisted that I come back in a month to get my blood drawn again to see if it increases or not.
And like others before of this clinic gone mental, at the end he talked about how dangerous ADHD meds are and how those can disrupt and damage the development of the brain.
I am 30. I think I am pretty much done cooking.
We then went back to the front desk to fix on a date for a quick phone call once they have all the other stats needed from my blood. After that they can send it to me via mail and then I can send it to my psychiatrist.
He then scheduled another blood test for in like a month. I nodded politely and already knew that I will cancel that month later appointment the moment I have my blood and ECG results on my mail because there is no way in hell that I come back to give blood again for ONE stat of my liver while all other liver stats are absolutely fine.
When I left that building I felt like I had left the twilight zone and there was this wave of … rage? I felt angry for some reason. Felt not taken serious and essentially a bit belittled because I was overweight. But a quick and passionate vent to a friend helped me calm down and see things rational and normal again.
But I thought I come here as well and share this moment of wtf and ask you all was, I overreacting when I left that clinic after my doctor told me to drink garlic shots to prevent cancer and to only eat salads until I lose enough weight until I am "healthy"?
I hope you all have a fantastic day! And Charlotte thank you for creating such good and funny videos and being such a spirit of comfort. You make my day ^^ I hope you have a fantastic day too and high five Mike from me :D
