Laptop battery

So my laptop won’t turn on anymore unless I first disconnect and reconnect the battery, and then after a few hours (sometimes instantly) of use it’ll start turning on and off randomly and I have to disconnect the battery again. Do I need to buy a new battery or is there potentially a different underlying issue?
