Having been in the game community a while, I've noticed there's a hatred for holdout maps that I never really see with things like objective or endless.

I can't bring myself to really understand it, I suppose?

My main issue is, with the game being out a while- most people speedrun through objective maps at light speed, not really allowing new players to take in the levels or the ambience. Which sucks bacause there's a lot of hidden lore, notes, easter eggs etc. The devs put a lot of work into the maps and it sucks that if you fall behind to look at some of the finer details of them you're effectively a dead man.

I've had friends try and play for the first time, only to tell me it isn't for them simply because I have to usher them to move at lightning pace so we're not left behind. (Game really just needs a tutorial, but that's a seperate issue.)

Now I know what you're thinking- "Well just play endless! That way you can teach them and you don't have to keep up with the group!"

Which, sure that's an option, but I've always personally found endless to be a bit boring. Starts off painfully slow, and depending on your team- gets out of hand fairly quick. Not to mention the idea of just killing enemies for an hour or so on end is a little uninteresting to me, perhaps because I'm a chaplain main.

First time I played Holdout mode I felt enlightened. It was nearly perfect really, a mode in which you're more or less confined to one wide open map, yet there were still objectives to keep your mind active between waves of enemies to kill.

It's got something for every class too, Chaplains like me are free to bless or perform mercy on players without the fear of being left behind. (Same with surgeons and healing allies) Officers and infantry men are free to kill to their hearts content, and the sappers can protect the team- while also getting their hands dirty if they wish. Whether it be walling off direct approaches from the infected, or walling off houses/bridges on Berezina etc. Musicians are useful as always when it comes to the hordes blowing through, also extra hands for building the bridge etc.

I always see people dog on maps like Berezina and I have to admit I don't get what exactly it is about the holdout maps that people dislike. Is it the cold debuff? I suppose it can be irritating if you have a team that refuses to help with the objective, like building the bridge or so forth.

I was pretty sad to hear about Jutland being cancelled, sounded like it was going to be pretty good. I think the objective was defending injured people in the church until daybreak, which sounds really cool- good opportunity for bits of lore and such as well. I hope we get to see something like it in the future sometime!

I guess I'm more or less just curious about the sub's opinion on Holdout as a mode overall, do you like it? If not why? I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts below!

Am I the only one who enjoys Holdout maps?
