[pc] [~2005] lumberjack hunts huge bugs
Platform(s): I played it on an old windows PC (chunky type), it was on a disc
Genre: not fps, not platformer. think like... spyro-esque? with guns. i don't know what you call the sort of 'per level fight the enemy and get to the boss at the end' of the early 2000s
Estimated year of release: I played it around 2004-2006, and graphics were decent so early 2000s I'd guess
Graphics/art style: spyro-esque is my best descriptor. 3Dish I think, cartoonish but not childish. bright colors but a darker color palette (think bright reds and greens but mostly browns, greens, reds), characters were roundish as opposed to angular. I'm scared of spiders so I remember they weren't realistic looking. not pixelated, though
Notable characters: main playable character was a guy with just an ax to start with and he definitely wore some sort of flannel/lumberjack type shirt, the majority of the rest of the characters were bugs, mostly I remember spiders but i know there were ants and other bugs, and there was at least one girl character that i think the guy had to rescue at some point. potentially also other villagers? but not within the gameplay for at least the first few levels
Notable gameplay mechanics: bugs had taken over houses and towns, you went around collecting weapons and ammo to kill them, it was sort of goofy but like. dark too. the levels got gradually harder with more bugs to kill. a mixture of like inside and outside houses, some minor puzzle solving in terms of navigating the levels around like bushes and walls. you had to find egg sacs and the big bosses were big bugs you had to kill so you didn't want to waste your big missiles or good shots. i think you MIGHT have had to clear all the bugs to progress?
Other details: I played it on a computer at an after school program (5th-8th grade) and we rarely got past the first three levels/areas, but they were distinct enough levels/areas where the after school leaders could say 'you can do one level and then its so and so's turn' and there wouldn't be like... any strong disconnect. there MAY have been a loose ongoing story but we never played enough to follow. we'd fight over our half hour of play time which was about how long it would take. one level was a house with several spiders around the outside and you had to get in and destroy the webs and eggs. the level with the girl happened at the bottom of or near a waterfall, and there may have been a village as more of a story plot than a playable area.
i have been looking for this game for years, and nobody else seems to have heard of it. i appreciate ANY help, i've googled this to no end, i've tried substituting different words, but i feel like i'm the only person who's ever played this game. this is like the third time i've tried to post here, and i'm hoping someone will eventually have heard of it. it's been years, so some of my memory may have mixed up the details, but this should be as close as i can get
