Recently I've seen people debating about which depiction of the Symbiote is better.

The comic version where the Symbiote only controlled Peter's body at night and Peter gets rid of it simply because he found out it was an alien that could control his body. In the comic the Symbiote is more like a scorned lover. The Symbiote only learned emotion from Peter and learned to enjoy being a hero. That's why it got attached to Peter. When Peter actively chose to reject the Symbiote it felt hurt and betrayed and wanted revenge.

Or...

The 90s version (and most versions after that.) where the Symbiote is more depicted as a parasite which makes its host more aggressive and corrupts them. Peter starts to get corrupted but soon snaps out of it and ditches the Symbiote. Then it wants revenge.

Personally I'm fine with either version! I think either of them can work in an adaptation. I think what matters is execution. I don't mind the change of making the Symbiote aggressive nor do I mind if they make it more sympathetic and misunderstood. Sometimes adaptations do both!

Animated and Spectacular mix the two versions together. The Symbiote does feel betrayed by Peter rejecting it as well as making him more aggressive.

"We wanted you, but you spurned us!" -90s Venom

"Stop. Don't do this. We only want to help you. Be with you!" -Spectacular Symbiote

The Spectacular Symbiote also literally ditches Brock when Peter tricks it by offering to have it bond with him again.

It is possible to have your cake and eat it too with the Symbiote. You can have it be aggressive while maintaining the themes of it feeling rejected and hurt.

I think people focus so much on the aggression thing being a big change from the source material that they overlook that there is effort to retain some of the original version in certain adaptations. Now yes, Animated and Spectacular are pretty much the only ones to do both but the point still stands that both can coexist and neither is better or worse than the other. All that matters to me is how it's executed and how it works as a whole.

I think both depictions of the Symbiote are equally fine.
