What if the major bad stuff in the 20th century was avoided?

1900s

⚠️ DISCLAIMER! ⚠️
Before we get started, I just wanna say, I KNOW this is probably stupid/unrealistic, and
I did minimal research, but this is because I wanted to focus on the events more than the realism factor (and also because I'm lazy lol). I am merely an ametuer/casual althist (and in general, story) writer who just does this for fun, and this is the first one I've decided to share with the world. This story is just meant as a fun thought experiment/hypothetical story, and not something that would of actually been likely to happen. So please, keep all criticism constructive if possible, I don't want to have to deal with people saying "Ummm, actually, X wouldn't lead to Y. Y was caused by Z, not Y" or whatever. You're probably right, but that's not the point here. The point is to make a simple story with a simple premise.

With that out of the way, here we go.
----------------------------------------------------------

We start nearly 100 years ago, in the late 1920's or early 30's. Due to some changes, presumably happening before the events of the story, the Great Depression didn't happen or was less bad, and Germany's postwar economic struggles, while still major, are less catastrophic than what they endured in our world, leading to no radicalist movements arising, and Hindenburg keeping power until his death in 1934.

With no Nazis, and therefore no WWII (or a less widespread one at the very least, that would most likely not be counted as a world war), Poland keeps its independence and pre-war borders, while Japan is able to focus on expanding in eastern Asia, keeping its war mainly with China and the Indochina countries. Without Pearl Harbor, the US never gets involved, and the Chinese Communists, and later the Soviets in 1951, end up being the ones to try and take them down, joining forces with nearby colonial powers to defeat the threat, causing Japan to be divided instead of Korea. This also prolongs the Chinese Civil War, causing it to end later, but with the same general result.

In the aftermath of this, the newly communist China and their ally the Soviet Union (which is weaker in this timeline due to no WWII meaning no American lend-lease to buff them up, but still somewhat formidable), attempt to spread their influence into some of the lands they liberated from the Japanese, which causes the west to worry about the rise of communism. With no nuclear bombs in this timeline (since they were created as a wartime invention, a war which doesn't happen here, and from documents and information gained from the Germans, the oppurtunity for which doesn't arise the same here), the west and east eventually may get into a conventional war. This war is likely very big and costly, both in terms of money and human life, but after many years, the west is victorious, and the Soviet Union dissolves and abandons the communist ideology, leaving what's left of China without an ally. (They may also abandon communism too, I couldn't decide tbh).

Due to the Soviet Union collapsing in the 60's, they never have a chance to invade Afghanistan, which likely prevents the rise of extremeist forces in the country, and this therefore ultimately means no 9/11 attacks in 2001. Instead, on February 20th, 1981, Argentine flight 342, which very nearly collided with the towers in our world, actually ends up hitting them, specificially impacting the Windows on the World resturaunt. As this was late at night however, there are fewer people inside, and therefore fewer direct casualties, and the tower is not one of them, as they were built to withstand plane impacts at traditional speeds. However, it still takes some fire and structural damage, neseccitating some repairs, as well as some other changes to prevent something like this from happening again, improving installing a red airplane light on top of the tower's antenna and improving the buildings' fireproofing and emergency systems. This crash, while far less devestating than the ones in our world, still later recieves a plaque/other sort of commemeration on one of the walls of the resturaunt after it gets repaired, which would likely be similar to the one for the '93 bombing in our world in some ways.

In the late 1980's, Gorbachev (if he still comes to power in this timeline, and if not, whoever replaces him during this time,) rebrands the former Soviet Union as the Union of Soverign States, something he was going to do in our world, but was a day too late and it got cancelled by the August Coup of 1991. The nation then attempts to transition towards a republic/democracy, but various issues still remain in the way of that in practice.

One major butterfly effect of having no 9/11 is, among other things, the 2008 stock market crash is less severe, nonexistent, or happens later than in our world if at all.

And finally, in 2023, to commemorate the towers' 50th birthday, Larry arranges plans to build a statue of Minoru Yamasaki or somethingon or near the plaza to commemorate their legacy. The statue is unveiled at the big party on April 4, hosted to celebrate the occasion.

I hope you enjoyed my story. Again, please think before you comment, and remember that an althist doesn't have to be realistic to be fun/interesting. Have a great day!
