I'll have to change my pants but I finally completed a " Horror " resident evil in the RE2 Remake.

SpoilerGeneral

I'll be honest and say I am a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to horrors. It's pretty ironic because I am fairly resolved in real life, but something about horrors just creeps me out; it's like the expectation of getting scared is what gets me.

I played Resident Evil, but only the action Jackson kind in Resident Evil 4&5. I played RE4 that much that even the regenerators section is just Tuesday for me; however, I always wanted to play one of the slightly scarier ones, so I decided to give the RE2remake a shot and... it was actually not that bad.

I went a bit unorthodox and decided to play the Claire playthrough first, just for a fresh take, rather than being a hunk that kicks ass and takes names, I am a chick that kicks ass.

Now I know that RE2 is still probably on the low scary scale for the RE series, but I gotta say, I shit my pants in the first hour like 6 times. I honestly think the first part of the RPD is the scariest section. You are still trying to find your footing, all the while you are in this dark as fuck corridor trying to find a switch or some shit.

It does get a bit chillier as it goes on. I could only play in like 30-minute bursts at a time back then, but gotta say, the RPD exploration was a blast. We will skip the part where it took me 45 minutes to figure out that I needed to combine the two items to make the C4 detonator.

The overall item interaction was fun too, examining items and finding little secrets or backtracking to get a nice grenade launcher felt good. I am glad I got the grenade launcher because fuck fighting those feral things and those monsters in the sewers using normal fire arms, I had a simple policy, I see creepy crawlys, I am setting them on fire.

Now the elephant in the room is when Mr X shows up, just as I was thinking to myself, " You big baby, RE2 is not scary at all, stop worrying ", and I do a little bit of community service by putting a fire out on a helicopter, you know, helping the environment.

Shit hit the fan fast, I flashed him ( With a bomb ), and I proceeded to throw hands with him. It didn't go very well, so I decided to go back to the main hub, gather my thoughts and reassess.

Then I ran into a turned Marvin :( predictable, but as the good hero I am, I decided to end his suffering with a bullet, now to say I shit my pants at what happens next is an understatement of the century, the fact that I didn't have a heart attack is quite frankly a gift from god which I will treasure by never firing a shot in RE2 ever again.

Now I knew MR X would have been in the 2nd-floor corridor, and I knew firing at good ol Marvin would set him off. I had the wherewithal to guess that, but I didn't realise he had a teleport mechanic, and instead of the second floor, he came from the 1st-floor shutter area, where you go first, and to see a 7-foot jumpscare, my heart left my chest and just hauled ass, thank the lord he can't enter the star room.

I did come to get used to him, and he honestly became more annoying than scary once you realise, he can't really catch you, and keep quiet, now the action jackson side of me was a bit irked that I couldn't shoot anymore, it was honestly not worth the hassle of him tracking you down so It made me rush through the next part.

So, while the initial MR X reveal was awesome looking back, it was a starting point of the game losing steam for me; instead of slowly being immersed and taking my time, I just ran past enemies and didn't really engage much.

I feel the game evaporates after the RPD section, too. Maybe I am in the minority here.

I don't know if I have another playthrough in me, and I was tempted many times to mod out Mr X or decrease the difficulty out of fear. I am happy that I didn't.

I am starting to believe.

Thanks for reading.

My scariest moments were:

That Mr X moment.

When that licker jumps through the glass in the interrogation room.
