Car stuck at mechanics for over 4 months now. What to do now?

đź’¬Discussionđź’¬

I sent in my car to my local mechanics shop in early January 2026 and its ticked over 4 months now with no updates. For context, the car is an Audi Volkswagen sedan, 2012-2016 model, single owner, serviced with dealership for first 7 years before being done by local shop.

Initially, it was sent in for repairs on the cooling system as there was an engine overheating issue, and after inspection, the mechanic then mentioned an oil pan needed to be replaced but the parts needed to be ordered in first back in mid February.

I have been patient enough and only checked in every two weeks via texts for progress updates but in the last two check-ins, he started to get hostile and defensive about the delays when i pointed out it has been over 3 mths with no estimated completion time.

Should I look to get the car towed to another shop or do I persist with this current mechanic?

Is it normal for a car to be sent in and not had any updates for 4 mths? I have had to borrow a relative’s car in the meantime and I feel i have taken liberties at this stage.
