AITAH for refusing to split the bills evenly with my roommate after she got a massive raise?
So for context me (31F) and my roommate "Dani" (29F) have been living together for about two and a half years. When we first moved in we agreed to split everything down the middle. Rent, utilities, groceries, all of it. At the time it made sense because we were earning roughly the same. She was a junior account manager, I was doing project coordination. Neither of us was exactly rolling in it.
About four months ago Dani got promoted to a senior role at her company. Like a serious jump, close to double her old salary. I was happy for her genuinely. We went out for drinks to celebrate and everything.
Here's where it gets complicated. A couple weeks after that she starts talking about upgrading the apartment. Nicer place, better neighborhood, rooftop access, the whole thing. The new rent would be about 40% more than what we're paying now. I told her I couldn't swing that comfortably and she said "don't worry we'll still split it evenly."
That's when I had to pump the brakes.
I told her I didn't think a straight 50/50 split made sense anymore given the gap in what we're each earning now. I suggested we split proportionally based on income. She earns roughly 2.3x what I make so the split wouldn't be equal but it would be fair in my opinion.
She did not take that well. She said a deal is a deal and we agreed on 50/50 from the start. She also said she worked hard for her promotion and shouldn't be penalized for it by covering more of my share. Which okay I get that argument but I also feel like I'm not the one pushing for a more expensive place. If we stayed where we are the 50/50 thing would never have even come up.
Now it's just awkward between us. She's been venting to our mutual friends and one of them texted me saying I was being weird about money and that Dani earned her raise. Which I never disputed. I just don't want to be stretched thin every month so she can have a rooftop.
We haven't signed anything yet so nothing is locked in. But she's been cold with me and honestly I don't know if we're even going to stay living together at this point.
AITAH for saying the split should change when she's the one who wanted the nicer place?
