Advice on post graduation direction?

Hello,

I’m (M21) currently a bit confused and hopeless about career stuff, and was hoping that Reddit may be able to help. I’m sure everyone else has experienced this classic post-graduation endless rumination on what to do with your life, so thought some people on here might have some nuggets of wisdom for me.

I graduated last summer from the university of Cambridge in biological sciences, specialising in psychology snd neuroscience. I now work for a charity as a data analyst. I’m not enjoying it much - quite slow paced, feels like limited impact, and I don’t love data analysis in general - I just took it because it was a job, and ethically good. I recently got offered a scholarship to study at Harvard for a year, in a very flexible program where I can kind of choose what to study. This flexibility is allowing me to re-evaluate the path I’m going down, and study some stuff I don’t have that much experience in yet.

My ambitions are doing something more or less ethically good for the world, doing something which feels important, hopefully making a decent bit of money, and feeling some power and influence eventually in whatever field I end up in (I understand everyone wants these things, I’m just trying to put it all out there lol).

Right now I’m pretty interested in working in policy, or regulation, within an industry which is commercially and societally significant (e.g. science, tech, energy). I’m really into politics and always have been, and now doing online courses and reading a lot about policy to get a feel for it and I do enjoy it. I’ve also thought about consulting, just to get that experience of the private sector and the prestige and opportunities of it afterward - but the long hours, moral ambiguity and sole crushingness of it are definitely drawbacks.

Basically, I think I want to work in the private sector, in something that feels important, but not sure what.

However, those are just ideas and what I want to do sort of changes every 6 months lol. I think the main thing that I’m struggling with is the feeling of it the two choices being either your making money and fucking up the world a bit, or trying to make the world a better place, struggling against the elites, and scraping to get by.

So, I’d love advice from anyone at how to approach the next few years, what of the choices I outlined are good if you have any experience or opinions on them, or other career paths I haven’t perhaps considered.

Thank you!
