Task completion?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for practical strategies. My 5-year-old understands instructions and is capable, but during tasks he suddenly drifts into his own thoughts/memories. He’ll start smiling, talking to himself, and completely lose track of what he was doing.
This happens even during things like:
• riding a bike
• simple tasks I’ve just explained
• activities he can do
Once he gets pulled in, the task is gone and I have to keep redirecting him.
What I’m trying to fix:
• staying mentally present during a task
• finishing what he starts
• not getting pulled away by internal thoughts
For those who’ve dealt with this:
• What actually worked to keep your child anchored to the task?
• Any specific techniques to reduce this “internal distraction”?
• How do you train a child to stick with the task until it’s done?
Looking for concrete, actionable strategies that worked in real life.
