Update: Modern Chinese Restaurant in SF - Down to Mission vs Marina. Which Would You Choose?
Hey SF! I posted here a couple weeks ago asking where to open a modern Chinese restaurant. Really appreciate all the thoughtful replies.
Quick update:
I’ve been walking the city non-stop, eating everywhere, talking to locals and operators — trying to understand how people actually go out here (especially evenings/weekends).
I’ve now narrowed it down to two neighborhoods: Mission vs Marina.
My rough take so far:
Mission
- feels very food-driven
- strong dinner energy + walk-ins
- people go out with intent to eat
- but already a lot of great options
Marina
- strong social / date night vibe
- higher spending power
- less Chinese food
- but I’m not sure if the energy fits a modern Chinese concept, or if it needs more “education”
Would love to hear from people who live in either.
For context — I’ve run restaurants in Singapore / Indonesia before, so I’m comfortable with the business side. Just trying to really understand SF's unique dynamics before committing.
Appreciate any honest takes. Your insights has been way more helpful than anything else so far!
Coffee on me if you're nearby in either neighbourhood. Thanks again.
