The Last Communist and Infra-Materialism

SpoilerDiscussion

I haven’t seen anyone mention this, but the Deserter’s confession on the island seems to mirror the arc of the students in the communist political vision quest.

He says he doubted the proletariat's historic role right as the aerostats arrived. In the logic of Mazovian Socio-Economics (specifically infra-materialism), that’s not just a moment of fear or anxiety—it’s the cessation of belief in what is still possible.

If infra-materialism suggests that collective fervor can make an inverted helix defy physics, then the sudden absence of that fervor is a physical catastrophe. Iosef wasn’t just a bad Commissar for the 114th; he was a metaphysical grounding wire. The moment he stopped believing in the proletariat’s historic role, that doubt manifested as a literal jam in the flak battery. He didn't just give in to 'reaction'—he effectively un-willed the revolution's defenses into non-existence.

Was the fall of the Commune actually an infra-materialist 'anti-miracle'? If the Deserter’s doubt could physically jam a flak battery, it stands to reason that the collective doubt of the revolutionary ranks is what actually destroyed Revachol. It wasn't a tactical defeat; it was a reality-wide collapse triggered by the defenders themselves. Iosef’s moment on the island might be the most honest account we have of the exact second the 'plasm' of the revolution collapsed in on itself as a vision of the future where the project could continue expanding in novelty was undone in a black fog on the horizon.

This feels like something of a stretch and yet I cant help but feel it works with established rules of the narrative - hence why I have decided to see what r/DiscoElysium thinks.
