Why is Drives so brutal?

Before Drives? You win some, you lose some, sometimes I'm at the top of my team, sometimes not. In other words, I felt like I was ranked fairly.

But since Drives started today, every match is brutal and it seems like every single player should be a few tiers ahead of me. I guess I could understand that it might be more competitive than usual, but this seems crazy.
