Upgrading headlights

I was planning on upgrading the headlights on a 2016 x1. The old halogens are just so dim. I saw there’s some direct plug in leds from diode dynamics, but they’re not DOT approved? Just wondering what are the implications of doing something like this. Or are there any DOT approved led bulbs that will work with the OEM housing. Thanks!
