Finally found something for "trance" biting

Resources

Hey everyone, quick share for the fellow "autopilot" biters in here.

I’m the type of person who bites their nails down to the quick without even realizing I’m doing it. I’ve tried bitter polish (Mavala, etc.), but I usually just end up biting right through it or getting used to the taste.

I just found this site StopBiting.today that uses your webcam to "catch" you mid-bite. It uses on-device AI to track your hand, and the second you move toward your mouth, it triggers an audible alarm to snap you out of it.

The Details:

  • The Cost: It has a 7-day free trial (no credit card needed to start), and then it’s $2.99/month. Honestly, that's cheaper than a bottle of polish or a single manicure, so it felt worth it for me.
  • Privacy: I was a bit paranoid about the camera, but it runs entirely on your own computer (WebAssembly/MediaPipe). You can actually turn off your Wi-Fi after the page loads and it still detects your hand movements—nothing is sent to a server.
  • Habit Reversal: It’s basically an automated version of Habit Reversal Training (HRT), which is the "gold standard" therapy for this stuff.

It's been helpful for me during deep work sessions when I'm most likely to bite. If you're struggling with the "subconscious" side of the habit, it might be worth checking out the free trial just to see if the alarm "jolts" you enough to stop.
