Why do people send one word responses?

I feel as though I’m in a vicious cycle of feeling bad when leaving someone on read when they’ve said one word it causes me to overcompensate to keep the convo going. Surely I’m not the only person that’s made to feel bad?

Does this say something about the person sending one word replies? This could just be an assumption but from experience it feels as though they struggle to take initiative and it always ends up revealing that they lack direction and motivation in many aspects in their life and essentially emotional intelligence. I wonder if this is an indicator of what the future holds.

I want to hear from the people who reply with just one word, are you just not good at conversing? You’re unbothered? Is this your way of having someone else putting in the effort so you don’t have to? Or something else?
